Strength Training may help Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
Researchers from Harvard found that an exercise program that includes strength training activities can actually
be safe, feasible, and beneficial for persons with fibromyalgia syndrome / chronic fatigue syndrome. These researchers
studied women who completed a twenty week exercise program. The program had the women go through a progressive regimen
that started with pool exercises to improve their joint movement, then moved on to walking and strengthening exercises
with hand weights, machines and the body's own resistance. After 20 weeks, the women's muscle strength and endurance
improved overall -- as did their symptoms of pain, stiffness, fatigue and depression, the researchers report.

I lift light weights with a personal trainer. yes, it is expensive, but it helps me with the ability to work full-time and by doing so, I can afford to pay the trainer. I used to go twice per week, but due to cost ($55 per session), I have reduced it to once per week in recent years and seem to get the same benefit. Whenever I tried to do light weights on my own, I would end up causing myself more problems. My trainer has her own studio and she seems to know how to help me lift weights and not injure myself. It has occasionally caused a flare-up, but the overall benefits have been worth it. I have gained strength particularly in my upper body, which has helped me a lot. The key is to go slow and easy with very light weights at first and not to do them too fast.
