Gentle Exercise for Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

If one feels up to it, gentle exercise is likely to be one of the best things to do for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Gentle exercise can help a person's body release the body's natural opiates (endorphins) and thus will likely relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. All one needs to do is to keep moving. Nothing fancy needs to be done. Gentle exercise also helps to improve one's circulation (blood carrying oxygen to all parts of the body), which makes the body work better.

Tell us your experience with gentle exercise as a treatment for fibromyalgia.

No Help at all, causes me pain   06/07/10

I love to work out. Since my injury which led to my fibromyalgia diagnoses, just walking around my house is so painful. To pick up my now 23 month old twins has been pure torture. I have missed out on so much.

Excercise is the key to my escape   09/15/09

BUt I do depend on either Lyrica or MJ to exercise. There's no question that if I'm not properly medicated, the backlash pain to a day of skiing or hiking or lifting weight can be pretty extreme. My elevatted mood really helps with that though. I'll do light yoga and a hot tub. But Lyrica and MJ really help. I'd prefer the latter but the Lyrica is prscribed.

Low and no-impact ONLY   10/11/07
Reviewed by:     The Beautiful Mountains of Western North Carolina, United States
Exercise helps a great deal and is a must in the treatment of fibro foe me. It gives me more energy, stretches my muscles, relieving tension and trigger-point aches, and lifts my mood. It also helps tremendously with my balance (dizziness and loss of balance are among my sympyoms), and I generally feel stronger and more in control. But it has to be gentle and of short duration. I only exercise for 5 or ten minutes at a time, but several times a day. Walking for exercise or using a treadmill is out of the question for me. I just end up in more pain. Over the years I have worked out a varying routine of Tai-Chi combined with dance (ballet and ballroom styles with modern mixed in, but always low-impact-no jumping or stomping), a few yoga postures and a bit of Tae Bo. On alternate days I do some strength training with 5 pound dumbells and a 20 pound bar.

exercise   11/17/06
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
Exercise has helped me to flush out toxins from the total body systems. i feel better when I do them & get the blood moving. I did run the risk of muscular spasm or exhaustion/injury; but found that after I started taking Recup, these problems have decreased over time & the exercise is beginning to build my muscles back to normal strength.

muscular atophy cannot be good for diseased muscle tissues .. increased blood flow nourishes these tissues with fresh oxygen .. " gentle excersize " can b done - right now . any movement iz better than sore , stiff , diseased muscle tissue .. just remember the "gentle" part and don't strain ..

I do this with resting   08/13/05

I rest first, so that I can manage to exercise. And when exercising, I do not push hard. Instead, I do sets of very gentle movements. None of that aerobic stuff that we used to see on TV. I find that I feel better after exercise.
