Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia

Acupuncture is a 5000 year old Chinese practice that involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin for therapeutic purposes. Acupuncture may actually help fibromyalgia tender point pain or myofascial trigger point pain because this practice is used for pain relief and to promote one's well-being. However, acupuncture is also used for headaches, constipation, sinuses, colds, asthma, ulcers, and much more so it may help other fibromyalgia symptoms.

I was finally diagnosed with fibro about 10 years ago, after many tests for all kinds of things. I now take Lyrica, didn't know there was other meds to choose from. Will have to ask Dr. about that next time. Need massage : )

Acupuncture is good!   08/02/11
Reviewed by:     Granada Hills L.A., California, USA
I have had several acupuncturists over a decade. I found a school of Oriental Medicine that gives treatments at very low cost ($25). The graduate students give the treatment in most cases, with careful review by doctors of Oriental Medicine. I also got treatments directly from the doctors on several occasions, as they were intrigued by my case and eager to try modalities on me. Since the doctors first learn to put the needles in on themselves, they find the best way to keep it from hurting. I am quite sensitive, but once the skin is pierced, the pain is gone, and the relief begins! I now go to a Veteran's health clinic, and the acupuncturists there are superb! They are treating me for several things in addition to the fibro, and they try to relieve my most pressing symptoms. They succeed! After a consult and checking various points and pulses, I lay on a massage type table in a comfortable room with soft music playing. The needles are carefully inserted, again, minimal pain gone in an instant. Then I relax for about 20 - 30 minutes, sometimes napping or meditating, very nice. Then the needles are removed, and I get up at my own speed. Any follow directions and a hug are given, and off I go. Afterwards, I am calm and energized, and able to accomplish a little shopping before heading back home. I sleep better and just feel better in general for a few days up to a week. We're still trying to devise the best protocol for my body and my diagnoses after a year, and most treatments are worth my time and money. I just feel better. I have fewer foggy days, more days I can be active, and while I have painful spots and other minor symptoms, I have a better overall feeling for a bit. Totally worth it!

Acupuncture for last 5 years   02/22/10
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I've been going for acupuncture for my fibromyalgia for the past 5 years. Between this and changes in my diet and lifestyle (no gluten and minimizing stress through life choices), I can almost say I don't have fibromyalgia. Of course, it's there if I don't follow my regimen of acupuncture and stress control, but when I follow them, I almost never get pain. I still have stiffness of my connective tissue, but I am now working on eliminating that through acupuncture and herbs as well. They have treatments for adhesions!
