Changed me for the worse   07/16/16
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
This medication did help with my pain, however, my husband ended up pulling my car keys because I was like a zombie. It was almost like an out-of-body feeling. I could not form a single thought without extreme struggle and concentration. I even went the extra mile and continued the medication, per my doctor's request and assurance that the side effects would improve. They did not and only worsened. Every person close to me noticed an extreme personality change as well...sadness, lethargy and loss of cognitive abilities. I woke every morning with a severe migraine as well. About a month ago, I was having a really bad bout with the fibro, so I took one 300 mg neurontin to see if it would help me sleep and as usual, it zonked me out but, I awoke to a crushing migraine. I have doctors and nurses in my family who have told me that this drug works well for the majority of the people. Kudos to them...I can not and will not take it again.

Horrible for me   12/14/14
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
With this medication I experience increased insomnia, agitation, increase in the frequency of muscle spasms or twitching, causes minor to sever headaches at least 3 to 4 times a week. I also experience periods of time when I feel more pain and anxiety. Since I started taking gabapentin (Neurontin)I have been experiencing more anxiety and restlessness than before, and I have more frequent and worsening headaches as I work to reduce the amount I take daily so that I can stop taking it (per doctor's instructions)

Gabapentin Gave Me Back My Life   08/18/13
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2007. I started on Lyrica - a drug I didn't tolerate at all. In fact, I had such a bad reaction to it that I suffered for five years with nothing more than Skelaxin and Flexeril to help with the pain, which in most people's minds would be considered severe. Finally, I got brave after an especially bad bout with my symptoms and tried Gabapentin. This drug is awesome! I still use Skelaxin as well for the muscle relaxing properties, and this nerve/muscle treatment combination has completely given me back my life. I work full time, run around with three kids, and can actually do housework again. I've found that 1,200 mg a day is the perfect dose and probably keeps me from suffering any major side effects. If you couldn't tolerate Lyrica, you really should try Gabapentin. I'd recommend going up in dose more slowly than what I've seen in many forums. I worked up to the 1,200 mg over nine months, starting with 400 mg and adding another 200 mg every week or two until I got to the "sweet spot."

I had only been taking 100mg twice a day, but another doctor is increasing (300mg once a day, now 300mg twice a day, working up to 3 times per day). The difference is amazing. Not 100 percent relief, but significant enough that I will continue with the treatment.

Greatly improved quality of life.   10/01/12
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
I have been in tremendous pain and had severe fatigue for 4 years. I am in a wheel chair. I also take dilaudid for pain. It wasn't helping much. I felt immediate improvement with the gabopenten. I slept well. And gradually the pain became less and I became more independently mobile. I am extremely happy to have a lot of my life back. I began this med with 200 mg at bedtime for 3 days. Then 300 mg at bedtime for 10 days. Now I'm on 600 mg - taken in 2 doses day and evening. The plan is to be up to 1200 mg. I am looking forward to that, because I have had such benefit from this medication.

AMAZING!   05/04/11
Reviewed by:     tesorrell, Indiana, USA
My fibro pain level was off the scale! The only thing I could do without pain was blink! Literally!!! It even hurt to breath. Nothing I tried helped---at all!!! I was even taking 400MG twice a day of Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin). Then my doctor upped my dosage to 800Mg twice a day. I woke up the next day with at least an 80% reduction in all my pain and 100% within about 1 1/2- 2 weeks. I only take Advil or Tylenol about twice a day at a minimum dose just because I do get a twinge of pain in general places sometimes if I don't use something along with the Gabapentin every once-in-a-while. It has changed my life---I have it back. I only hope and pray it will be permanent.

Neurontin, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, Hot Flashes   07/04/10
Reviewed by:     Location Not Given
April 2000 I was Rx'd Neurontin (not generic) primarily for FMS pain - peripheral neuropathy, chronic myofascial pain. My initial dose was 100mg at bedtime and gradually increased to 800mg in AM and 1600mg at bedtime - total 2400mg/day. I currently take 1 400mg capsule in AM and 2 400mg capsules at bedtime - total 1200mg/day. The side effect of somnolence does not affect me from the daytime dose. I no longer have chronic insomnia from FMS because the bedtime dose makes me fall asleep within 5-10 minutes. Neurontin has helped with other symptoms such as burning pain, sensitive skin and IBS for me. An added bonus since I'm post menopausal was discovering that Neurontin was controlling my hot flashes - that studies had been done regarding this, and that my gyn/doc approved since I refused HRT/ERT. I will be discussing the possibility of reducing the dose to 1 300mg capsule in AM and 2 300mg capsule at bedtime. Bottom line for me is that for 10 years Neurontin has helped with a variety of fibromyalgia symptoms, stopped insomnia and stopped hot flashes. To get that much relief from one medication has been fantastic for me. Too bad it cannot help OA or Spinal Stenosis especially since I cannot take any pain meds, e.g. ultracet, ms contin, vicodin or the like due to severe adverse side effects, e.g. vomiting and dysphoric anxiety. Neurontin has helped me in so many ways. Had studies be done for this drug's effectiveness for fibromyalgia, the results would be the same/similar as for Lyrica and Neurontin would be an FDA "approved" drug for Fibromyalgia.
